Arugula – Roquette

Arugula is a tasty green, but it can be a bit overpowering if used alone. I like to include about 50% arugula in my mixed green salads.

Oct 9 = Day 0.  Plants started from seed (Botanical Interests).  Seeds sowed in 1.5-inch rockwool cube in 2-inch net-pot.  Moistened with Seedling Blend, a dilute blend of fertilizers.  N-P-K (in ppm): 22-29-16.

Oct 11 = Day 2.  Plants germinated, placed directly under a fluorescent light (spiral bulb, 23W, 6500k) for 16 hours per day.

Oct 18 = Day 9.  2 seedlings per rockwool cube.

Oct 18 = Day 9.  Installed the plants into two 5-gallon buckets using the Masterblend-based Regular-Strength Blend.  N-P-K (in ppm): 103-95-202.  Plants now receive 10 hours of light per day from the LED grow light.  Additionally, one of the buckets is getting aeration from a small air stone connected to the GH2716 air pump.  The other bucket is non-aerated.

Nov 18 = Day 40.  Aerated bucket is on the right.

Nov 18 = Day 40.  Plants were placed in front of a window receiving about 3 hours of sunlight per day.  The use of the LED grow light was discontinued.  The pH of the fluid in the buckets was measured: non-aerated = 4.5, aerated = 5.0.  Since this is a bit on the low side for optimal plant growth, the pH was raised up to 6.0 by the addition of ‘pH Up’.  The non-aerated bucket received 5 mL of pH Up diluted in 1 cup tap water.  In the aerated bucket, the fluid level was slightly lower, so this bucket received 4 mL pH Up diluted in 5 cups tap water.

Nov 27 = Day 49.  Use of aeration was discontinued at this time.  The plants appear to be the same size, so aeration does not offer any benefit to the growth rate of the plants.

Dec 26 = Day 78.  Began harvesting leaves for use in salads.

Feb 3 = Day 117.  Continuing to harvest leaves for salads every week.  Checked the pH of the fluid in the two buckets: 6.5 and 7.0.

Mar 13 = Day 155

Mar 13 = Day 155.  One of the plants in the right bucket is bolting.  The other plants are still growing well.  The left bucket has plenty of fluid, but the right bucket is getting light, so I added 1 gallon of Regular-Strength Blend.

Mar 31 = Day 173.  Added 1 gallon of Regular-Strength Blend to each bucket.

Apr 14 = Day 187

Apr 14 = Day 187.  Added 1 gallon of Regular-Strength Blend to each bucket.  Plants are bolting, so I trimmed off the flower stalks.

Apr 19 = Day 192.  Since the plants have bolted, the leaves have gotten quite bitter, and so the plants were discarded at this time.

Total fluid used = 6-7 gallons per bucket.

Jun 15 = Day 18.  Thinned to 1 plant in net-pot.  Installed plant into a 3.5-gallon bucket using Jungle Juice Blend, a regular-strength fertilizer blend.  N-P-K (in ppm): 113-79-147.  Moved plant to indoor grow room, receiving 9 hours LED grow light per day.

Aug 13 = Day 77.  Entire plant is wilting in the direct sunlight, it is just too hot for this plant.  The indoor grow room is consistently above 80 °F during the day, and doesn’t cool down much at night, so I think this plant would do better under cooler conditions.  Also, the pH of the hydroponic fluid has dropped to 4.5, which is way too low for healthy growth.  All leaves were harvested at this time.

Total fluid used = 10 cups (0.63 gallon).  Final pH of fluid = 4.5.

52610-pk-p1Apr 7, 2016 = Day 0.  Plants started from seed (Park Seed Co.).  Seeds sowed in 1.5-inch rockwool cube in 2-inch net-pot.  Moistened with dilute fertilizer solution: 1.2 mL (1/4 tsp) Dyna-Gro Liquid Grow, 0.8 mL pH Down per gallon of tap water.  Nutrient concentrations (in ppm):  N 22, P 29, K 16, Ca 6, Mg 1.6, S 0.2, Fe 0.3, Mn 0.2, B 0.1, Zn 0.2, Cu 0.2, Mo 0.003, Ni 0.0003, Co 0.005.  pH = 6.0.

Apr 10 = Day 3.  Plant germinated, placed directly under a fluorescent light (2 ft. T8 bulb, 17W, 6500k) for 16 hours per day.

Apr 19 = Day 12.  Installed plant into 5-gallon bucket.  Hydroponic solution composed of 5 gal (18.9 L) tap water, 75 mL 250x Masterblend 4-18-38, 75 mL 250x calcium nitrate, 75 mL 250x magnesium sulfate, 1 mL Dyna-Gro Pro-TeKt, 5 mL pH Down.  (This solution is equivalent to 5 gallons water, 10 g Masterblend, 10 g calcium nitrate, 5 g magnesium sulfate).  Nutrient concentrations (in ppm):  N 103, P 95, K 202, Ca 100, Mg 29, S 34, Fe 2.1, Mn 1.1, B 1.1, Zn 0.3, Cu 0.3, Mo 0.05, Si 4.  pH = 6.0.  Plants moved to indoor grow room, receiving 9 hours LED grow light per day, plus 3 hours sunlight per day.

May 13 = Day 36.  The Dragon’s Tongue arugula plant was originally residing in the same container as some mustard plants.  However, the mustard plants are growing much faster than the arugula, which is causing the fluid level in the container to drop too quickly, which could be stunting further growth of the arugula.  Therefore, the arugula needs to be moved to its own container to have success.  The plant was moved to a 1-gallon plastic container (Syntha-6), containing 14 cups (3.3 L) tap water, 13 mL 250x Masterblend 4-18-38, 13 mL 250x calcium nitrate, 13 mL 250x magnesium sulfate, 0.18 mL Dyna-Gro Pro-TeKt, 0.88 mL pH Down.

Feb 11 = Day 13.  Installed plant into 0.5-gallon glass jar.  Hydroponic solution composed of 0.5 gal (8 cups, 1.9 L) tap water, 3 mL Dyna-Gro Liquid Grow.  Nutrient concentrations (in ppm): N 111, P 143, K 79, Ca 32, Mg 8, S 0.8, Fe 1.6, Mn 0.8, B 0.3, Zn 0.8, Cu 0.8, Mo 0.01, Ni 0.002, Co 0.024.  pH = 6.0.  No pH adjustment required.

Mar 1 = Day 32.  Based on information obtained in this post and this post, it seems that the pH of the Liquid Grow-based hydroponic solution tends to drop below 4.0 by the end of the growing period, which is not ideal for nutrient uptake.  Therefore, I have switched to a Masterblend-based solution.  Nutrient concentrations (in ppm):  N 103, P 95, K 202, Ca 100, Mg 29, S 34, Fe 2.1, Mn 1.1, B 1.1, Zn 0.3, Cu 0.3, Mo 0.05, Si 4.  pH = 6.0.

Mar 8 = Day 39.  Moved plant to indoor grow room.  Plant receives 9 hours LED grow light plus 3 hours sunlight per day.

Mar 17 = Day 48.  Only 3 cups of fluid remain in the container.  Added 2 cups fresh hydroponic fluid.  Began harvesting lower leaves for salads.

Mar 22 = Day 53.  Only 1.5 cups of fluid remain in the container.  Added 3 cups fresh hydroponic fluid.

Mar 25 = Day 56. Only 2.5 cups of fluid remain in the container.  Plant is currently using about 0.7 cups of fluid per day!  Added 2 cups fresh hydroponic fluid.

Mar 27 = Day 58.  Added 3 cups fresh hydroponic fluid.
